Idrija’s Lace Legacy:
150 Years of Craftsmanship and Tradition

One of Slovenia’s most historic towns and UNESCO-listed heritage site, Idrija is celebrating 150 years of its renowned Lace School. Since its establishment in 1876, the school has played a vital role in preserving, developing and promoting the centuries-old craft of Idrija lace-making.
To mark this anniversary, the town will host the 44th Idrija Lace Festival from 19 to 21 June. The festival will recognise the significant contributions and impact of the world’s oldest continuously operating lace school, showcasing the rich tradition, artistry and cultural heritage that have made Idrija lace famous far beyond Slovenia’s borders.

On this Day In History – 12th June
Born in Ljubljana on 12 June 1828, Luiza Pesjak was a writer, poet, and translator who became one of the most influential figures in 19th-century Slovenian literature. She is also regarded as the first woman to write a novel in the Slovene language.

On the Road with Branko and Marko: Tracking Every Mile of the Journey
Branko and Marko’s 2026 European motorbike adventure is in full throttle.Over the past 2 days, the tour has truly lived up to its name – Adriatic Rollercoaster Extreme. A motorcycle tour through spectacular areas along the Mediterranean Sea.
The group have been challenged not only from what the bikes can do but navigating some of the most beautiful and technical roads you could ride on. They have completed 3 days of the tour, and yes, they are starting to feel tired, but
as they drift off to sleep each night, their minds are filled with thoughts of the adventure awaiting them the next day.Some highlights were catching a ferry and riding through the islands of Cres and Kirk, just magical.
Opatija was another standout, where the stunning Adriatic coastline and breathtaking views provided a memorable backdrop to their journey.

Kapelica Update: How is the project progressing
The restoration of the Kapelica Memorial at Rookwood cemetery is progressing well. On the 29 April, Art Restorations commenced work on the frescos, with an expected completion by early July.
Due to adverse weather over the past weeks, the work has been delayed by approximately two weeks. According to the project schedule, the frescos restoration must be completed before any major works, including landscaping can begin.
As a result, these works will start later than planned. Despite this minor delay, the project remains on track to be completed by 1 November 2026.
The project team continues to focus on acquiring the memorial stone and landscape design. Our sincere thanks to all those who have contributed to this project. Your generosity has made the restoration of our Kapelica possible.

This applies only if the deceased was receiving a pension from Slovenia.
The death should also be notified to the Zavod za pokojninsko in invalidsko zavarovanje Slovenije (ZPIZ).

Following the success of the workshop, we are exploring the possibility of establishing monthly Slovenian Folk Dance classes in Canberra and perhaps Sydney as well led by a local teacher.
This would be a wonderful opportunity to:
- Learn traditional Slovenian dances
- Connect with Slovenian culture and heritage
- Meet new people and make friends
- Enjoy a fun and active social activity
- Help preserve an important part of our cultural traditions
No previous dance experience is required, and people of all ages are welcome to express their interest.

7:00 a.m. Sunday (QLD time): For beginners—kids learn Slovenian through songs, games, and basic grammar.
8:00 a.m. Sunday: For children aged 9+ with some Slovenian knowledge.
Adults: can choose from two advanced beginner classes, one intermediate class, or a 60-hour intensive beginner course.
