FIFA World Cup 2026: Weekly Round-Up by Zac Limare

Photo: Claudio Thoma/Keystone/AP
The opening week of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has featured standout performances and surprising results, with Lionel Messi scoring a hat-trick for Argentina and Kylian Mbappé leading France to a strong start with a 3-1 win over Senegal .England impressed with a 4-2 win over Croatia, while several favourites stumbled, including Spain, Portugal and Brazil, who all dropped points against determined underdogs.
Australia also made an amazing start to the tournament with a 2-0 victory over Türkiye, putting themselves in a strong position to compete for a place in the knockout rounds. Overall, the tournament already looks highly competitive and unpredictable, with both football’s biggest stars and underdog nations making their mark.

Kapelica Update: How is the project progressing
The restoration of the Kapelica Memorial at Rookwood cemetery is progressing well. On the 29 April, Art Restorations commenced work on the frescos, with an expected completion by early July.
Due to adverse weather over the past weeks, the work has been delayed by approximately two weeks. According to the project schedule, the frescos restoration must be completed before any major works, including landscaping can begin.
As a result, these works will start later than planned. Despite this minor delay, the project remains on track to be completed by 1 November 2026.
The project team continues to focus on acquiring the memorial stone and landscape design. Our sincere thanks to all those who have contributed to this project. Your generosity has made the restoration of our Kapelica possible.
Hvala.

SAAC Reunion and Statehood Day Celebrations- June 20
Tomorrow, we invite current and former members, volunteers, families, supporters, and friends to come together for a truly special evening as we celebrate our history, our achievements, and the people who have shaped our community.
This year marks three significant milestones in our shared story.
- 35 years of Slovenian Independence.
- 55 years since our clubhouse first opened its doors.
- 62 years since the formation of the Slovenian Australian Association of Canberra.
For decades, our club has been a place where friendships were formed, families celebrated milestones, children learned about their heritage, and lifelong memories were created.
ONE COMMUNITY • ONE CELEBRATION • ONE UNFORGETTABLE NIGHT
Let’s fill the hall with familiar faces, treasured memories, and new stories as we celebrate our past, present, and future together.
Everyone is welcome.
Interested in Learning Slovenian Folk Dancing ?
Following the success of the workshop, we are exploring the possibility of establishing monthly Slovenian Folk Dance classes in Canberra and perhaps Sydney as well led by a local teacher.
This would be a wonderful opportunity to:
- Learn traditional Slovenian dances
- Connect with Slovenian culture and heritage
- Meet new people and make friends
- Enjoy a fun and active social activity
- Help preserve an important part of our cultural traditions
No previous dance experience is required, and people of all ages are welcome to express their interest.
Expressions of Interest Now Open
Please register your interest by return email.
If there is sufficient interest, we hope to launch regular classes in Canberra and Sydney in the near future.
Keeping Our Traditions Alive, One Dance Step at a Time
The success of the recent workshop has shown that our community has a genuine passion for Slovenian culture, language, music, and dance.
Together, we are ensuring these traditions continue to thrive for generations to come.
