Today was our final day of driving. We covered 480km and headed out of Canberra to Cooma via the small rural communities of Aralen and Countegany. A number of roads were being freshly graded and what a difference a freshly graded road makes to the driving experience.
We stopped for lunch at Cooma Public School, with a delicious lunch being served by the Parents and Friends Association. The kids loved looking at all the cars, with our little 2.0L, 4-cylinder Subaru not as popular as the Holden 5.7L V8’s, with modified exhausts.
There was an unofficial competition of which car the kids thought sounded better as the cars were revved to their limiters with the school kids shouting with joy. A Holden Ute was declared the winner by the judges whom had a maximum age of 12. The ironic part is that the winner was broken down on the side of the road a few hours later…. luckily it was not a major issue.
After lunch, we headed back to Canberra via Adaminaby with the rally finishing at the Honeysuckle campground in the Namadgi National Park (A.C.T).
With 40 cars and over 100 people present, we basically occupied the entire campground… expect for one couple who probably thought that on a Wednesday evening, they would have the place to themselves…..oops. Lucky for them, we only stayed for 2 hours before heading back to town.
Considering that we spent 4 days driving in and out of Canberra, the scenery we saw was diverse and beautiful in different ways.
In total, the rally raised $410,000 and Tubesters United was the 8th highest fundraiser. The order that you start each day on is determined by your fundraising number, so we stated 8theach day.
I will send a final update tomorrow explaining some of the issues we have experienced and where we finished on the leaderboard for this year’s rally.
