Fun Fact: One of the world’s oldest wooden wheels was found in Slovenia.
A wooden wheel with an axle, dating back more than 5,000 years, was discovered in the Ljubljana Marshes in the early 2000s. It is considered one of the oldest wooden wheels ever found, offering a remarkable glimpse into prehistoric technology.

On this day in Slovenian History- 16th October
On this day in 1658, Luka Mislej, a Slovenian stonemason and sculptor, was born in Vipava. He later settled in Ljubljana, where he became an established master craftsman.
Mislej collaborated with prominent artists of his time, and his workshop later became associated with the celebrated Baroque sculptor Francesco Robba. His story offers a glimpse into Slovenia’s rich artistic heritage and the craftsmen who helped shape its Baroque churches and cultural landmarks.

Mislej’s legacy is a reminder of the important role that art, craftsmanship and religious architecture have played in shaping Slovenia’s cultural identity.Today, Slovenia’s historic buildings and artworks remain a valuable link to the country’s artistic heritage, preserving stories of the people who helped shape its cultural landscape.

From Australia to Slovenia: Sooshi Mango Live in Ljubljana
From making Australian audiences laugh with their comedic take on migrant family life to bringing their humour to Slovenia, Australian comedy trio Sooshi Mango continue to demonstrate the universal power of laughter. Best known for their larger-than-life characters, exaggerated family antics and relatable portrayals of Italian-Australian culture, brothers Joe and Carlo Salanitri and their friend Andrew Manfre have built a devoted following by turning everyday family experiences into comedy.
Their performance in Ljubljana brought a distinctly Australian flavour of humour to the heart of Slovenia, creating a special connection between the two countries through shared cultural experiences, family traditions and plenty of laughs. Aleks Lajovic spotted the trio strolling Ljubljana and was also in attendance for their show: The show was a great success, the hall was full and there was lots of laughter. They were very well received.
Znamenje Project Update – A Shared Community Effort

Join us on Sunday 1 November at 10am for our traditional All Souls Day mass at the Rookwood Mausoleum, celebrated by Provincial Father Stephen Bliss. Afterwards, we will move to Slovenian Lawn 2 for the blessing of our Znamenje and the unveiling of the memorial stone honouring the priests and nuns who served our Slovenian community in NSW.
The restoration work is finished, the memorial stone has been ordered and landscaping is well underway.
A bit of trivia: According to p.Simon Peter, the correct name for what we have all been calling the “Kapelica” is actually “Znamenje”. Who knew we had been using the wrong name all along!
We hope to see you all there.

We’ve been asked by members whether Slovenian Australian Association Canberra is organising a cherry picking trip to Young this November.
It’s something our community has enjoyed in the past, and we’d love to see if there is enough interest to bring this old Club tradition back!
So, before we start making arrangements, we want to know how many people would be interested in coming along.
