Tanya Plibersek will be a strong voice for all the people of Sydney. She is energetic, enthusiastic and experienced. As a longtime Sydney resident, Tanya is part of our community and will fight for the issues that matter to people in this area.

Since joining the work force Tanya has worked in teaching, hospitality and policy development. Over the past few years Tanya has worked to prevent domestic violence, tackle aircraft noise, and address other issues affecting inner city residents. She has been a member of the NSW Council on Violence Against Women.

Caring for Families

Sydney families are under seige.

John Howard's cuts have made childcare more expensive and forced some parents to leave their jobs. 

The public health system is under attack. Hospital funding has been slashed, dental care for pensioners has been abolished and the price of medicines has increased.

The Howard Government has cut funding to public education, including $840 million from universities alone.

Sydney families need a strong voice in Canberra to fight for basic services like health, childcare and education.

A Fair Tax System 

A GST is unfair and complicated. The biggest tax cuts go to the very wealthy while ordinary Australians pay more for almost everything they buy - food, clothes, some medicines, home repairs, movie tickets and even haircuts.

And there is no guarantee that the GST won't rise.

The cost of living in the city is already high. A GST will make it unbearable for many. And if it's no good for families, it's no good for Australia.

Labor's tax package delivers most to those who need it. It is simple, fair, and makes more sense.

Employment

A GST won't get Australians back to work. 

The Howard government is destroying jobs and job security. 

Youth unemployment is at thirty percent- that's higher than when Mr Howard took office. The privatisation of the CES has made things worse.

Labor has a plan for cutting unemployment and putting Australia back to work.

Labor will repeal Mr Howard's unfair laws which attack job security and the right to a fair day's pay.
 

Support for older Australians

Older Australians deserve respect and support. But life under the Howard Government has been hard for elderly people - nursing home fees, healthcare and dental care have been cut. The GST is the last straw.

Older people have already paid tax on their savings - and Mr Howard wants to tax them again when they spend that money. Groceries, non-prescription medicines, public transport and clothing and footwear will all be taxed by the GST.

This is on top of Mr Howard's changes to aged care. Older people can now pay up to $27, 944 for one year of nursing home care.

Tanya Plibersek and the Labor Party will abolish nursing home fees, restore dental care, and oppose the GST - because older Australians deserve better .
 

Community

We are part of a strong community in Sydney. We have worked together to make the most of the different cultures in our area. 

But the Howard government is dividing Australian communities through the politics of fear, envy and intolerance.

On election day Australians will face a clear choice. 

John Howard's Liberal government has failed to care for our community. Cuts to health care, childcare, aged care and education funding have hurt people in Sydney. The privatisation of the CES has left many people without support when they need it most- youth unemployment is higher now than when John Howard took office. 

To make matters worse, Mr Howard wants to introduce a new 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST). This new tax means that an extra 10% GST will be added to goods we buy and services we use. For example, food, clothes, some medicines, home repairs and renovations, gas, electricity and even movies tickets will be taxed with the GST.

In contrast, Labor has more than just a plan for tax. Labor has a plan for the nation - concrete policies to enhance security and opportunity for all Australians. 

Labor will:

ˇ reform the tax system to ensure that the benefits flow to those who need them most- without an unfair GST;

ˇ make job creation and job security a priority; 

ˇ restore funding to health, giving an extra $500 million to public hospitals;

ˇ abolish John Howard's nursing home fees and restore dental care funding.

But most importantly, only Kim Beazley and Labor can provide the leadership that Australia needs at this time. Labor has always valued unity and community. On October 3rd- remember that Australia deserves better than John Howard's leadership can provide.
