Slovenian Statehood Day is a special occasion for Slovenians at home and around the world. It is an opportunity to reflect on the events of the early 1990s, to honour the courage, determination, and unity that led to Slovenia’s independence, and to celebrate the beauty and achievements of Slovenia today. This year carried even greater significance as Slovenians around the world celebrated the 35th anniversary of that historic moment. Although separated from the homeland by thousands of kilometres, Slovenians in Australia have always maintained a deep connection to the homeland. Across generations, the community has remained dedicated to preserving Slovenian language, traditions, faith, and cultural heritage, ensuring that the Slovenian spirit continues to thrive for future generations.
On Friday 26 June, the Slovenian Consulate NSW, led by Honorary Consul Mr Aleks Lajovic and Honorary Vice Consul Mr Mark Stariha, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia Canberra, hosted a special reception at the New South Wales Parliament to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of Slovenian Independence and Statehood.

The occasion brought together members of the Australian Slovenian community, Distinguished Members of Parliament and representatives of the Slovenian organisations. It was an opportunity not only to celebrate Slovenia’s remarkable journey as an independent nation but also to acknowledge the lasting contributions of Slovenians in Australia in preserving their heritage and strengthening the ties between Australia and Slovenia.
As I entered the Parliamentary reception room and saw beautiful photos of Slovenia displayed across the electronic screen, I felt an immediate sense of pride and reflection. Those images were a reminder of the true meaning behind the event. We came together to honour the courage and service of all those who fought for Slovenia’s independence 35 years ago, and to celebrate the enduring spirit and dedication of Slovenians who built and sustained the community and cultural life. As a third-generation Slovenian, I was not present to follow the historic events of the early 1990s. Attending this celebration offered me an even greater appreciation of my Slovenian heritage and filled me with gratitude for those whose vision, courage, and devotion secured Slovenia’s independence.
Although some were unable to attend in person, their presence was warmly felt through a series of video messages. Each presenter acknowledged this milestone and expressed appreciation for all Australian Slovenians who have so tirelessly contributed to sustaining community organisations, preserving traditions, and proudly promoting Slovenia abroad in Australia.
The video presenters included: Father Ciril Božič OFM OAM; Mr Luka Mezgec, member of the Slovenian National Cycling Team and rider for Australian team Jayco–Alula; The Hon. Tanya Pliberšek MP; Chef Ana Roš, mastermind behind restaurant Hiša Franko; Aleksander Čeferin, President of the Football Association of Slovenia, 7th President of UEFA (Union of European Football Associations), and Vice-President of FIFA; and Ms Suzana Lep Šimenko, Minister for Relations between the Republic of Slovenia and the Autochthonous Slovenian National Community in Neighbouring Countries, and between the Republic of Slovenia and Slovenians Abroad.

As he concludes his four-year mandate next month, we also heard from the Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia Canberra, H.E Mr Marko Ham, who expressed his gratitude to the community for their support during his time in Australia and reflected on the achievements of both Slovenia and the Slovenian community in Australia. The reply address to His Excellency Mr Marko Ham was conducted by The Hon Ben Franklin MLC, President of the Legislative Council of New South Wales.
During the formal proceedings, a particularly poignant moment occurred when Honorary Consul Mr Aleks Lajovic acknowledged the outstanding service of two distinguished figures in the community, Mr Alfred Brežnik AM and Father Darko Žnidaršič OFM. Mr Alfred Brežnik AM, the Former Honorary Consul General played an influential role in securing support for Slovenian independence in Australia during the early 1990s. His lifelong dedication, passion, and continued presence within the community remain an inspiration to generations of Australian Slovenians. As a third-generation Slovenian, I feel privileged to have his unwavering support, encouragement and words of wisdom, all of which continue to inspire and guide my own contributions. Recognition was also given to Father Darko Žnidaršič OFM, who has faithfully served the Slovenian Mission in Merrylands for more than two decades. Through his pastoral leadership and strong commitment to the community, Father Darko has provided spiritual guidance while helping preserve Slovenian traditions, faith, and cultural identity for countless families.

As the formal proceedings concluded, guests had the opportunity to catch up with friends and colleagues while also meeting new members of the community. For me, it was particularly rewarding to broaden my network by connecting with people I had not previously met. In my role as VOSA PR, Media and Communications Coordinator, it was a valuable opportunity to talk about the weekly newsletter. Meeting some new third-generation Slovenians and introducing them to the newsletter, I was pleased to hear of their strong interest in joining the mailing list and staying connected with upcoming events, community news, and their cultural heritage.
The celebration also marked the first official function organised by the recently appointed Honorary Consul, Mr Aleks Lajovic, and Honorary Vice Consul Mr Mark Stariha. As Managing Director of Impact International, Aleks is committed to strengthening the relationship between Australia and Slovenia through greater cooperation across business, culture, and community engagement.
The Slovenian Consulate NSW plays an important role in representing Slovenia and its interests within New South Wales. Its responsibilities extend beyond providing consular assistance to citizens and supporting visa and administrative matters. The Consulate actively promotes Slovenian culture, fosters political, economic, and educational connections, and helps strengthen the enduring relationship between Australia and Slovenia. Through these efforts, it continues to promote Slovenia’s values, identity, and cultural heritage on the international stage.
Thirty-five years after independence, the connection between Slovenians in Australia and their homeland remains as strong as ever. It is a relationship built on shared history, enduring pride, and a collective commitment to ensuring that the legacy of those who came before is never forgotten and continues to inspire generations to come.
