FIFA World Cup 2026: Weekly Round-Up by Zac Limare

Australia’s World Cup dream came to an agonising end last Friday, falling to Egypt in a penalty shootout after 120 minutes couldn’t separate the sides.
While the result was difficult to take, the Socceroos earned plenty of respect for another determined campaign and proved they can compete with the world’s best. Around the tournament, Morocco’s incredible run gathered more momentum with another upset, Norway shocked Brazil to become the surprise package of the knockout stage, and France, Spain and Belgium all stamped themselves as serious championship contenders.
The week’s biggest talking point came in Argentina’s thrilling win over Egypt, where a series of contentious refereeing and VAR decisions left players and fans debating whether the right calls had been made.
The focus now shifts to an outstanding weekend of quarter-finals. Spain and Belgium promises to be a showcase of attacking football between two teams in outstanding form, while Norway has the chance to continue its remarkable fairytale against England.
Argentina will also be under the spotlight when it meets Switzerland, with all eyes on whether it can block out the noise from the controversy and take another step towards the World Cup final.
