On this Day in Slovenian History: August 28
Ivan Tavčar was born on 28 August 1851 in Poljane nad Škofjo Loko. He became one of Slovenia’s most renowned writers, lawyers, and politicians. Tavčar served as mayor of Ljubljana from 1911 to 1921, playing an important role in the city’s political and cultural life. As a writer, he is particularly remembered for his novels and stories portraying Slovenian rural life, love and the changing world.

His best-known works include Cvetje v jeseni (Blossoms in Autumn) and Visoška kronika (The Visoko Chronicle), being considered one of the major works of Slovenian historical fiction. Tavčar died in Ljubljana in 1923 but he remains an important figure in Slovenian literary and political history.

Bocce Star Shines at Asia Oceania Championships

What a performance from Nicole Samsa at Myrtleford 2026!
🥇 GOLD – Women’s Singles
🥇 GOLD – Women’s Progressive
🥈 SILVER – Mixed Rapid Relay with Stefano Chiandotto
🇦🇺 NEW AUSTRALIAN RECORD – 30 hits from 41 throws in the Women’s Progressive.

Nicole’s Singles final was an absolute thriller. Facing China’s Xiping Cheng, Nicole held her nerve when it mattered most to take the match 13–11 and secure the Gold medal for Australia.
Her Progressive campaign was equally impressive, culminating in another Gold medal after setting the Australian record earlier in the competition.
Two Gold, one Silver and an Australian record. Congratulations Nicole — an outstanding Championship in the Green & Gold!

Kidney Kar Rally
Day 3 and 4: Aleks Lajovic & Damien Novak’s Journey
Day three provided very different conditions to day two.
Instead of snow, we had dust and instead of 1 degree, we enjoyed a balmy 18 degrees.
Today, we departed Canberra and headed to Narooma via Bodalla and back to Canberra via Michelago.
The drive was filled with narrow tracks and some steep drop offs in places, with a few cars coming unstuck and requiring a visit to the “beautician” / panel beater. One poor entry cracked their oil sump on a large rock and had to be towed out.

After lunch, we headed back to Canberra via Adaminaby with the rally finishing at the Honeysuckle campground in the Namadgi National Park (A.C.T).

Day four was our final day of driving. We covered 480km and headed out of Canberra to Cooma via the small rural communities of Aralen and Countegany.
We stopped for lunch at Cooma Public School, with a delicious lunch being served by the Parents and Friends Association. The kids loved looking at all the cars, with our little 2.0L, 4-cylinder Subaru not as popular as the Holden 5.7L V8’s, with modified exhausts.
There was an unofficial competition of which car the kids thought sounded better as the cars were revved to their limiters with the school kids shouting with joy. A Holden Ute was declared the winner by the judges who had a maximum age of 12.

Rookwood Cemetery- Slovenian St Raphael Lawn 3
Our forward-thinking Franciscan priests had the foresight to arrange dedicated lawn areas at Rookwood Cemetery for members of our Slovenian community. Slovenian Lawns 1 and 2 are now full.
The only burial plots still available within the Slovenian lawn areas are in Slovenian St Raphael Lawn, also known as Slovenian Lawn 3.
There are still plots available, however it is not known how long the remaining plots will continue to be available specifically for members of our Slovenian community.
A Monumental Lawn Grave in St Raphael Lawn may accommodate up to three coffin burials, or up to five cremated remains, subject to the cemetery’s requirements.
The plots are offered with a Perpetual Interment Right. This means the right of interment does not expire and there are no annual renewal fees.If you or your family would like to be buried within our Slovenian St Raphael Lawn, you may wish to consider purchasing a plot while they are still available.
